These snow peak stakes are the best pegs available.. used by the US military, they are ‘hot forged’ , making them extremely strong, and resistant to bending..
These are certainly beautifully crafted and designed stakes.. they are not your normal peg.. see the large head, making it easy to get a good strike from the hammer. Also, you can see how well it is aligned, directly in line with the length of the stake. The hole is used to tie a rope, or particularly to help pull the stake out …
One thing really surprised me, was how much vibration there was with the steel peg.. it really showed up how the head is not directly over the shank.. see how the snow peak stake made a neat hole, straight in.. well the steel peg, it just didn’t want to go in, and kept jumping around.. see the hole it made..
There are several special things about these snow peak stakes, making them very different from a normal steel peg.. firstly they are hot forged, and hammered.. so the molten iron is poured into individual moulds, then they are pressed, and hammered, just like a blacksmith would make a samurai sword. By hammering the hot iron, this aligns the molecules in rows, instead of having them aligned randomly, which makes it extremely strong, and resistant to bending.. then they are electroplated black. The design is different to a normal steel peg.. it has a large solid round head, which is directly above the shank of the stake.. so when you hit it with a hammer, the energy is driven directly down the stake.. a steel peg with a V bent head, the force of the hammer is lost, as the head isn’t directly above the shank.. this causes vibration, and results in the peg bending under stress.. the other clever design feature, is the hole used for pulling the stake out.. the key to this is, you can twist the stake, which breaks the seal in the ground, and makes it much easier to pull out again..
